I just took a peek at the newly released trailers for Speed Racer the movie and I’m on the fence. The graphics look great and there’s a star-studded cast list including none other than Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarrandon, Rose McGowen, and Christina Ricci. But overall it looks more campy and overdone than I would have hoped. The extreme color and surreality of it reminds me a lot of Mystery Men meets Tokyo Drift, neither of which really impressed me. I’m sure my race car fanatic son will love it, but he’s only 5. I think the creators of this flick have managed to eliminate the original generation of speed racer fans in trade for the younger ADHD crowd. Take a look for yourself and leave your comments below.

I too had the same doubts about the live action version of Speed Racer. Being my favorite cartoon when I was growing up, I was fearful that it would be another “Scooby Doo” or worse, “Flintstones” especially when I saw that John Goodman had been cast as ‘Pops’. Fear not, race fans! The movie delivers. The Brothers did the original cartoon much justice. The storyline was exactly how every episode of the cartoon was written. Without giving anything up, if you’re a Speed Racer fan, you need to see the movie. It’s going to be huge. And then the entire world will know our secret.
